Battle Brewing in the Land of the Rising Sun: LMGT3 Preview for the 6 Hours of Fuji
The picturesque Mount Fuji looms large over the Fuji Speedway this weekend, its snow-capped peak a stark contrast to the heated battles set to unfold on the tarmac below. As the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) rolls into Japan for the penultimate round of the season, all eyes are on the LMGT3 class, where the championship could potentially be decided.
Nestled in the foothills of Japan’s most iconic mountain, Fuji Speedway has long been a theater for motorsport drama. This year, it plays host to what could be a title-deciding weekend for the Manthey PureRxcing squad. Their #92 Porsche 911 GT3 R currently holds a commanding 28-point lead over their sister car, the #91. But in endurance racing, nothing is certain until the checkered flag falls.
The Contenders
The #92 Manthey PureRxcing Porsche, piloted by the formidable trio of Alexander Malykhin, Joel Sturm, and Klaus Bachler, has been a model of consistency this season. With six podium finishes, including a win, and two pole positions, they’ve built what seems to be an unassailable lead. But as any seasoned endurance racing fan knows, a single mishap can unravel an entire season’s worth of work.
Nipping at their heels is the sister #91 car, eager to close the gap and keep the championship fight alive. The intra-team rivalry adds an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings. Will team orders come into play, or will Manthey let their drivers duke it out on track?
“Between the two Manthey cars, we know they’re competitive rivals. There’ll be no team orders – they’ll be allowed to scrap for it themselves,” says Sam Smith, WEC expert.
But it’s not just a two-horse race. The Heart of Racing Aston Martin, fresh off a victory in Monza, is looking to capitalize on their momentum. With Aston Martin’s historical success at Fuji, they could be the dark horse to watch this weekend.
The Hometown Heroes
Japan’s motorsport faithful have plenty to cheer for this weekend. The D’Station Racing Aston Martin, whose factory is a stone’s throw from the circuit, will be gunning for glory on home turf. Meanwhile, Takashi Kimura makes his WEC debut in the Lexus RC F GT3, adding another local flavor to the mix.
Let’s not forget the TF Sport Aston Martin, featuring Japanese drivers Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii. The home crowd support could give these teams the extra push they need to challenge for podium positions.
Technical Challenges
Fuji Speedway presents a unique set of challenges for the LMGT3 field. The long 1.5-kilometer main straight demands top-end speed, while the technical final sector requires precise handling and good traction out of slow corners.
Traffic management will be crucial, especially in the tight and twisty section before the main straight. GT3 drivers will need to be strategic about where they let the faster Hypercar class through, ideally on the straights to minimize time loss.
The Dark Horses
While much of the attention is on the championship leaders, several other teams could shake up the order. The Iron Dames Lamborghini has shown flashes of speed, particularly with Michelle Gatting behind the wheel. If they can sort out their reliability issues, they could be in the mix for a podium.
The United Autosports McLaren, despite some bad luck this season, has the pace to challenge at the front. A clean race could see them fighting for top honors.
And let’s not count out the Ford Mustang GT3 of Proton Competition. With the experienced Christian Ried back behind the wheel, they’ll be looking to unlock the potential that’s been evident but elusive so far this season.
Predictions
Predicting the outcome of an endurance race is a fool’s errand, but that’s never stopped us before. The smart money is on Manthey PureRxcing extending their championship lead, but don’t be surprised if Heart of Racing pulls off another upset win.
One thing’s for certain: with so much at stake and such a competitive field, the 6 Hours of Fuji promises to be a nail-biter from start to finish. Whether you’re a die-hard endurance racing fan or a casual observer, this is one race you won’t want to miss.
As the sun sets behind Mount Fuji on Sunday evening, we’ll know whether we’re crowning our LMGT3 champions or if the title fight will go down to the wire in Bahrain. Either way, it’s going to be one hell of a show.
